Keeping our Children Safe: Chicago Children's Advocacy Center
As one of our BPNN partners, Chicago Children’s Advocacy Center plays an instrumental role in our coalition’s efforts to provide child sexual abuse prevention education. Chicago Children’s Advocacy Center implemented an in-person sexual abuse prevention curriculum called Second Step Child Protection Unit at two Brighton Park neighborhood schools prior to the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.
During the 2021-2022 academic year, they were able to implement a modified curriculum virtually at two of our neighborhood schools. At one, where evaluations were able to be executed, student participants were very engaged in the curriculum and 97% reported increased content knowledge as a result of taking part in the lessons. The Chicago Children’s Advocacy Center instructor also placed one child abuse hotline call as a result of a disclosure made in a lesson.
The efforts of Chicago Children’s Advocacy Center to facilitate access to this important content in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic are critical to our coalition’s continued progress toward our goals of reducing acts of violence and abuse and facilitating opportunities for healing within our community.
