On May 23rd, Brighton Park Neighborhood Council (BPNC) hosted 400 middle school students for our 9th annual Youth Summit at the University of Illinois at Chicago.
The day long event was organized by the BPNC Student Voice Committees(SVCs) at 6 participating schools. Throughout the year, SVC members met weekly to discuss pressing issues in their schools and communities, advocate for policy changes at their schools, and to plan the youth summit. Students were involved in every stage of the summit’s planning process from the T-shirt design to the workshops planning.
The Opening Ceremony was led by youth leaders and included speeches on immigrants rights, racial justice, violence prevention and self care.
Later that day, Students had the opportunity to attend 2 of 17 different workshops led by youth and adult allies, including workshops on the #NoCopAcademy campaign, LGBTQ+ identity, and transitioning from middle school to Kelly High School, Brighton Park’s only neighborhood public high school.
#NoCopAcademy Workshop focused on alternatives to policing
